Francesco Farioli Reflects on His Tenure at Ajax

In a revealing interview with ESPN, Francesco Farioli, the current head coach of FC Porto, candidly shared his thoughts on his previous stint at Ajax, admitting that he feels he performed at a higher level during his time in Amsterdam than in his present role. This reflection comes on the heels of a challenging season with Ajax, which saw them squander a significant lead in the race for the Eredivisie title, ultimately finishing behind PSV after being ahead by nine points.

Glory with FC Porto

This season, however, marks a turnaround for Farioli, as he achieved success with FC Porto by clinching the championship title. Despite celebrating his first trophy as a coach, he is nostalgic about his previous achievements. “If you want my honest opinion,” Farioli remarked, “I think I did a better job last season. What I mean is that we didn’t have a trophy to give the fans, but that shouldn’t diminish what we achieved together.” His humility in acknowledging the hard work put into the last season, despite the absence of silverware, highlights his dedication to the sport.

A Deep Connection to Amsterdam

The Italian coach did not shy away from expressing his affection for Amsterdam and the Ajax community. “I love the city. My family does too. We love Amsterdam, the club, and the people within the club,” he stated. This heartfelt connection is evident in his memories of the close-knit atmosphere he experienced while in charge. The camaraderie he shared with board members, staff, and players shaped his time there profoundly, leading to sentiments of missed opportunities: “You know how strong our bond was. How close-knit we were. And, of course, we felt we were so close to giving everyone something truly special. But in the end, it didn’t work out,” he concluded, reflecting on the bittersweet nature of his departure.

Ajax’s Current Struggles

As for Ajax, the club is navigating a turbulent phase, finishing fifth in the Eredivisie after traditionally being a dominant force in Dutch football. To salvage their season, they must participate in play-offs for a chance to compete in the UEFA Conference League. This current predicament serves as a stark contrast to the successes that Farioli recalls from his previous season at the helm.
