IPL Clash Abandoned Due to Rain
The highly anticipated match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens faced an unfortunate turn of events as rain disrupted the proceedings, leading to its abandonment after just 22 deliveries. This marked the first no-result of the 2026 IPL tournament.
Kolkata Knight Riders, having suffered defeats in their opening two matches against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, found themselves in a precarious position at 25 runs for 2 wickets following 3.4 overs when rain struck at 7:48 PM local time.
Despite a brief respite from the rain around 8:28 PM, which came 40 minutes before the 11:14 PM cut-off for play, the ground staff could not prepare the field in time for a potential five-over shootout, resulting in the match being officially called off.
The Punjab Kings, remaining unbeaten, secured the top spot in the league standings with five points accumulated from three matches, while Kolkata managed to earn their first point of the season under fortuitous circumstances. Notably, Kolkata was without their key spinners for this match; Varun Chakravarthy was sidelined due to injury, and West Indies’ Sunil Narine could not participate due to illness.
In a surprising tactical move, Kolkata’s captain Ajinkya Rahane decided to bat first despite the looming threat of rain. Unfortunately for them, the decision backfired as both of his opening partners, Finn Allen and Cameron Green, fell victim to the bowling of Xavier Bartlett in the second over, caught behind in quick succession.
With the match abandoned, both teams shared the points, marking a disappointing but rather common occurrence in T20 cricket when the weather intervenes.
