Jake Gordon to Miss Mid-Year Internationals with Achilles Injury
Scrumhalf Jake Gordon will be sidelined for the upcoming Nations Championship due to a torn Achilles he sustained during a recent match. The surgery he underwent on Monday has ruled him out of Australia’s tests against Ireland, France, and Italy.
The 32-year-old athlete was injured while playing in the NSW Waratahs final Super Rugby game, where they suffered a close 31-25 loss to the Western Force in Perth. According to reports, Gordon was seen clutching his right leg in distress during the first half of the game.
Following the successful surgery, the NSW Waratahs confirmed Gordon’s absence, stating, “The scrum-half will be sidelined for a significant period and will miss the Wallabies’ upcoming Nations Championship campaign.” This news comes as a blow to the Australian squad as they prepare for their first match of the season against Ireland in Sydney on July 4.
The Wallabies are scheduled to face France a week later in Brisbane, followed by a match against Italy in Perth. Subsequently, they will meet Japan in two back-to-back Tests, first away on August 8 and then at home the following week against Eddie Jones’s side.
With Gordon out of the picture, young talents Tate McDermott and Ryan Lonergan are in contention to take over the scrumhalf position. Notably, Gordon had been the preferred option for coach Joe Schmidt in recent selections.
This injury unfolds amid concerns over player fitness in rugby, as another notable player, Kurtley Beale, suffered a similar Achilles injury back in June 2024, which kept him sidelined for nearly a year.
