Jannik Sinner and Jessica Pegula Advance in Miami Open
In an impressive display of skill, world number two Jannik Sinner from Italy and American fifth seed Jessica Pegula both triumphed on Saturday, securing their spots in the third round of the ATP and WTA Miami Open.
Sinner’s Strong Performance
The 24-year-old Sinner, who is the reigning Wimbledon champion, faced off against Damir Dzumhur, currently ranked 76th from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sinner quickly overwhelmed his opponent, winning the match with a score of 6-3, 6-3 on the hard courts of Florida.
Reflecting on his performance, Sinner stated, “First round matches are never easy, so I’m very happy and let’s see what’s coming.” He noted that he will next compete against either France’s 31st-ranked Corentin Moutet or Czech player Tomas Machac.
Aiming for the Sunshine Double
Sinner has recently marked a significant career milestone by capturing his 25th ATP title after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells final earlier this month. He is currently on a quest to achieve the “Sunshine Double” by winning both the Miami and Indian Wells tournaments, a feat last accomplished by Roger Federer in 2017.
Match Highlights
During the match against Dzumhur, Sinner broke serve early, taking a 2-0 lead after his opponent sent a backhand long. He maintained this advantage, ultimately sealing the first set in just 34 minutes while saving a break point with an ace in the seventh game. In the second set, he again broke early, establishing a 2-1 lead and ultimately finishing the match with a backhand winner, wrapping it up in 70 minutes with only eight points lost on his serve.
“Starting off with a break straight away, I tried to be a bit aggressive. At times it worked very well, at times I made a couple of unforced errors. But I didn’t have a lot of time to adjust here. It’s very different than in a while,” Sinner remarked.
Pegula’s Swift Advancement
On the women’s side, Jessica Pegula also advanced to the third round after a quick match that lasted only 38 minutes. Pegula benefited from a retirement due to illness by her opponent, Britain’s Francesca Jones, who exited the match while trailing 6-1, 3-0.
Pegula focused on maintaining her concentration throughout the match, stating, “I was just trying to focus on myself, stay in there every point, stay super positive.” As last year’s Miami runner-up, she is set to face off against Canada’s 26th seed Leylah Fernandez, who secured her place by defeating fellow left-hander Oksana Selekhmeteva in a tightly contested match.
Upcoming Matches
Fans are now looking forward to seeing how Sinner and Pegula will fare in their respective matches as they aim to continue their successful runs in the Miami Open.
