Jon Rahm Faces Warning for Outburst at British Open
Jon Rahm, the former world number one from Spain, received only a warning after expressing his frustration by throwing a golf club during his second round at the British Open. On Friday, Rahm managed to score a round of 67, positioning himself four shots behind the leader, Australian Lucas Herbert.
Incident on the 15th Hole
The incident occurred on the par-three 15th hole, where Rahm pulled his tee shot, leading to his moment of frustration. Although such behavior could result in a shot penalty under the R&A’s code of conduct, he was not penalized but instead warned by an official later in his round.
Rahm’s Reaction and Future Considerations
Reflecting on the incident, Rahm stated, “I didn’t think about it until I saw him on 17, and when he was walking up to me, I knew exactly what it was for, but I didn’t think about it in the moment.” Known for his passion on the course, he acknowledged that his emotional responses can sometimes overshadow his gameplay.
Acknowledging Emotions on the Course
When questioned about whether he would be concerned about similar outbursts in the remaining rounds at Royal Birkdale, Rahm admitted, “I shouldn’t have reacted that way, but I did. I mean, you guys are acting like it’s every single hole. I get it. I had a moment.” He recognized his intensity, stating, “I’m definitely more intense and passionate than a lot of the players out here, especially at work.”
Maintaining Authenticity in Gameplay
Rahm emphasized the importance of staying true to himself, reiterating that attempting to alter his natural reactions on the course could potentially detract from his performance. However, he expressed an understanding of his need to manage such moments better, accepting responsibility for his actions during the round.
