Kangaroos Coach Kevin Walters to Join St Helens After World Cup

In a significant career move, Australia’s rugby league head coach Kevin Walters announced that he will step down from his role to take over the English Super League team, St Helens, following the Rugby League World Cup scheduled for later this year. Walters, who has been at the helm of the Kangaroos since Mal Meninga’s departure two years ago, expressed his excitement for the challenge ahead.

A Legacy of Success Awaits at St Helens

In a statement released after finalizing a three-year contract, the 58-year-old emphasized St Helens’ status as one of the most prestigious and victorious brands within the sport. He remarked, “St Helens are one of the most iconic and successful brands in rugby league.” His recent experience in England during the Ashes series, where he observed the toughness and skill of the English players, has further fueled his anticipation for engaging with the Super League in 2027 alongside the Saints.

World Cup Preparations Underway

Before his transition to the English side, Walters will lead Australia’s reigning champions in the upcoming World Cup, which will take place across Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea from October 15 to November 15. Australia has been drawn into a competitive group alongside powerhouse New Zealand, with their first match set to take place in Sydney on October 15.

A Player Turned Coach with an Impressive Track Record

Walters boasts an illustrious playing history, having participated in 291 matches with the Canberra Raiders and Brisbane Broncos, and securing six Premierships. His international experience is noteworthy as well, having played 20 State of Origin matches for Queensland and representing Australia in 11 Tests. Following his playing career, he took on coaching responsibilities for both the Broncos and the Queensland team prior to his appointment with the Kangaroos.
