Kasia Niewiadoma Takes Tour de France Femmes Lead on Mont Ventoux
Kasia Niewiadoma showcased an outstanding performance in the Queen stage of the Tour de France Femmes, decisively defeating her rivals Marlen Reusser and Demi Vollering. This victory not only awarded her the stage win but also propelled her into the coveted overall lead of the competition.
Beginning the day sitting in third place, 1 minute and 17 seconds behind the lead, the Polish cyclist made a bold move by launching an attack 8 kilometers from the summit of the renowned Mont Ventoux, located in the picturesque Provence region of southern France. By the time the three leading contenders reached the finish line, Niewiadoma had established a 15-second advantage over Vollering, with Reusser trailing behind in third place, positioned 39 seconds adrift.
“I’m just so tired and so blown away with what just happened,” expressed Niewiadoma after her remarkable victory. The emotional moment resonated even more as she spotted her parents in the crowd during the climb, with her father visibly moved to tears, motivating her to strive for their pride.
The 31-year-old cyclist didn’t simply ride tactically; she executed a risky early attack that capitalized on her reputation as the better climber among the top three competitors. Niewiadoma revealed that her strategy was influenced by the wind conditions, which would make it challenging for her competitors to keep up on the higher, more rugged terrains of the Mont Ventoux.
Ultimately, the Canyon-SRAM representative crossed the finish line at an elevation of 1910 meters, achieving a time that put her 1 minute and 16 seconds ahead of Dutch rider Vollering. Elisa Longo Borghini finished third, a further 26 seconds back, just ahead of Reusser, who found herself in a difficult position.
Meanwhile, the defending champion, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, finished the stage a substantial ten minutes behind the leader, indicating a significant challenge for her in retaining her title as the competition proceeds.
The Tour de France Femmes is set to conclude in Nice, with the title still very much in contention as the cyclists tackle the hilly terrains that lie just beyond the charming Riviera city. The remaining stages will determine who ultimately claims the championship.
