Kenyan Athletes Set to Defend Titles at the New York Marathon
In an exciting announcement, Kenyan runners Hellen Obiri and Benson Kipruto have confirmed their intentions to defend their respective titles at the upcoming New York Marathon, part of the prestigious World Athletics Platinum Label road race, which is set for November 1, 2026. This race is particularly significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of the famed five-borough course that attracts nearly 60,000 participants and over two million spectators annually.
Record-Breaking Participation and Competition
The 2026 New York City Marathon will feature an impressive lineup that includes three defending champions, 40 Olympians and Paralympians, 25 medalists from Olympic, Paralympic, and World Championships events, and 22 national record holders. Notably, last year’s marathon broke all previous records with a participation of 59,219 finishers, making it the largest marathon in history for the second consecutive year.
Obiri’s Impressive Track Record
Hellen Obiri, who made history by breaking the marathon course record last year, is keen to reclaim her title. The 36-year-old athlete originally took nearly three minutes off the previous record, finishing in an astonishing time of 2:19:51. This year, Obiri will face formidable opponents, including Olympic champion Sifan Hassan, the defending New York champion Sheila Chepkirui, 2022 world champion Gotytom Gebreslase, and last year’s world bronze medalist Julia Paternain.
