THE BIG TALKING POINTS AHEAD OF PSG AND ARSENAL’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL MEETING

In an eagerly anticipated Champions League final set to unfold in Budapest, reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are poised to face off against Arsenal, a club that has yet to claim the prestigious trophy. Under the guidance of manager Mikel Arteta, the Gunners recently broke a 22-year drought to win the Premier League, igniting hopes that they can unseat the formidable French champions in this pinnacle encounter.

ARSENAL’S SET-PIECE THREAT

This season, Arsenal has often faced challenges in creating opportunities during open play. However, they have demonstrated significant potency from set pieces, an area where they have wreaked havoc. Central defender Gabriel Magalhaes is among the physical players who excel in these situations, and the Gunners aim to exploit what may be PSG’s soft underbelly, namely their goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, by placing immense pressure on him during corners. Set-piece coach Nicolas Jover has garnered a reputation as one of the best in the industry, contributing to nearly 40 percent of Arsenal’s goals en route to their Premier League triumph. PSG coach Luis Enrique acknowledged this strength, stating, “People may say that they don’t score team goals, but who cares about that? Ask any Arsenal fan and I’m sure they’re delighted.”

PSG’S STRONG LEFT FLANK

The return of Jurrien Timber to fitness from a groin injury serves as a boost for Arsenal. The challenge for Arteta lies in resolving how to counteract PSG’s menacing left flank. Winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has arguably emerged as one of the tournament’s standout players, netting ten goals. Alongside Kvaratskhelia, left-back Nuno Mendes poses a significant threat advancing forward. Arteta must deliberate whether to reintegrate Timber into the starting lineup after a two-and-a-half month absence, or alternatively, utilize central defender Cristhian Mosquera on the right. In Timber’s absence, Declan Rice has also been employed in that position but will hold crucial responsibility in midfield, contending with PSG’s Vitinha.

MILEAGE CHECK

Many of the expected starters for Arsenal have clocked over 3,000 minutes of play this season across various competitions, with key players like Rice, William Saliba, Gabriel, Martin Zubimendi, and David Raya surpassing 4,000 minutes. Despite the fatigue this accumulation of minutes brings, Arteta remains steadfast in his belief that his squad will not use tiredness as an excuse. Reflected in his comments, he stressed the importance of embracing the challenge: “That’s the context and that’s the scenario, and we have to embrace it and especially enjoy the opportunity.” On the contrary, Luis Enrique has effectively managed squad rotations at PSG, allowing many first-choice players to rest after claiming their twelfth Ligue 1 title in the last fourteen years. Only three players, Willian Pacho, Vitinha, and Warren Zaire-Emery, exceed 3,000 minutes of play this season. Highlighting the importance of rotation, Luis Enrique articulated, “Rest is also an integral part of preparation, especially when we’re playing matches like these.”

CLEAN SHEET MACHINE

The defensive records of both sides lead many to speculate whether the match will pit PSG’s “unstoppable force” against Arsenal’s “immovable object.” Arsenal’s defense has been remarkably solid, conceding only six goals throughout the tournament and goalkeeper David Raya has achieved nine clean sheets, matching the all-time record for the competition. In front of Raya, the central defensive duo of Gabriel and William Saliba will be put to the test as they aim to thwart PSG’s Ballon d’Or winner, Ousmane Dembele, bolstered by Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue on the flanks.

A LUIS ENRIQUE SURPRISE

In the lead-up to the final, PSG’s dramatic semi-final clash against Bayern Munich captured global attention. Despite a thrilling first leg that ended in a 5-4 victory for PSG, coach Luis Enrique opted for a more conservative strategy in the return leg, achieving a 1-1 draw that secured their place in the final. Known for his tactical adaptability, Enrique has indicated that PSG will adjust their approach against Arsenal. “We’ll have to adapt to play and defend in a different way compared to what we usually do if we want to get the better of them,” he asserted. Meanwhile, Safonov has employed tactics to manage high-pressure moments, such as swiftly clearing the ball off the pitch to alleviate pressure from Bayern’s dynamic winger, Michael Olise. Arteta, in preparing for the encounter, noted, “We have analysed everything they do in every phase. We’ve prepared the possible scenarios. We try to understand the purpose behind what they do and what they want to achieve.”
