MOROCCO TO BE ‘REAL TEST’ FOR STOUT NETHERLANDS TEAM, SAYS COACH KOEMAN
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman remains cautious after his team secured the top position in Group F with a convincing 3-1 victory over Tunisia. He emphasized the importance of treating their upcoming match against Morocco as a significant challenge in the World Cup knockout stage, scheduled for Monday in Monterrey, Mexico. Koeman acknowledged that despite the Dutch team’s impressive performance, comprising seven points and scoring ten goals during the group stage, the encounter with Morocco presents a formidable test that cannot be underestimated.
“I’m not sure if we are the favorite in the match against Morocco,” Koeman expressed to the media. He reiterated the necessity of focusing on the immediate challenge presented by Morocco, remarking, “It’s a good team with a lot of quality, and they can score easily.” The coach refrained from discussing potential future matches, stating, “I don’t think we’re in a situation yet to think about that,” highlighting the significance of being fully prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
Despite a successful run that led the team to the knockout rounds, Koeman remains committed to addressing defensive weaknesses, notably after his squad conceded goals in seven consecutive matches. He explained, “We do pay attention to that,” identifying issues with player positioning and effective blocking, indicating that constructive discussions with the players will take place to rectify these concerns.
Koeman maintained perspective on the situation, acknowledging the positive aspect of the team’s attack: “Getting a goal against is part of the game, and we have scored 10 goals in three games as well.” However, he identified the need for greater compactness and sharper transitions within the team, expressing the belief that improvement is ongoing. “You never stop learning in football. There are always moments in a game where, as a trainer, you think there’s room for improvement,” he noted.
As the Dutch team prepares for their upcoming match, they will continue their training at their base camp in Kansas City until Sunday, before heading to Mexico, where they expect to encounter hot weather conditions. “It’s a football country. It’s interesting. It’ll be hot,” Koeman remarked. He expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and readiness for the challenges that await them.
Koeman also took a moment to appreciate the enthusiastic support from Dutch fans, who filled Kansas City Stadium with an array of orange shirts and chants during the last match. “That gives you a fantastic feeling when you enter the stadium,” he said. However, his focus remains firmly on the match against Morocco, emphasizing the high stakes involved in knockout football. “We’ll play well and win the match, because now if you lose you go home and if you win you stay in the tournament,” he stated, underscoring the team’s determination to advance further in the competition.
