LENS SECURES FIRST COUPE DE FRANCE TITLE WITH VICTORY OVER NICE
In a historic moment for RC Lens, the team has clinched the Coupe de France for the very first time, triumphing over OGC Nice with a decisive 3-1 victory in the final held at the iconic Stade de France. The match was a thrilling encounter, showcasing the determination of both teams eager to secure silverware.
The initial phases of the game were marked by tension, with both teams cautiously probing each other’s defenses. It wasn’t until just before the 15-minute mark that the match truly sprang to life. Lens’ Allan Saint-Maximin came close to scoring with a powerful shot that skimmed just above the goalpost. Meanwhile, Elye Wahi of Nice squandered a promising chance from close range, as both teams aimed to establish an early advantage.
As the first half progressed, Saint-Maximin broke free from the defenders and rounded the goalkeeper, only to have his shot dramatically blocked right in front of the goal line by a defender. On the other side, Nice’s Robin Risser made crucial saves to deny attempts from Sofiane Diop and Dante, keeping the scoreline level as halftime approached.
The deadlock was finally broken at the 25-minute mark, when Florian Thauvin found the back of the net with a precise left-footed shot from 15 yards out, after receiving a well-placed pass from Matthieu Udol. This goal marked Thauvin’s 14th of the season, igniting jubilation among the Lens supporters who began to dream of a monumental victory.
Lens quickly doubled their lead at a critical juncture, as Thauvin’s corner kick was headed towards goal by Odsonne Édouard, with the ball taking a deflection on its way past the Nice goalkeeper Maxime Dupé, further consolidating Lens’ control over the match.
However, in a display of resilience, Nice responded during injury time of the first half. Djibril Coulibaly managed to halve the deficit with a superb header, following a corner taken by Jonathan Clauss, setting the stage for a tense second period.
The second half saw Nice intensifying their efforts to equalize, coming agonizingly close when Antoine Mendy’s header hit the crossbar, leaving the Lens fans with bated breath. Despite this pressure, the quality of Lens prevailed as they restored their two-goal cushion with 12 minutes remaining in the match. Abdallah Sima’s flicked effort skimmed past Dupé and crossed the line, solidifying Lens’ lead.
Nice, determined to fight back, once again hit the woodwork with just under ten minutes remaining when substitute Kevin Carlos’ header rattled the post, but it was not to be. Lens expertly managed the closing minutes of the game to secure their historic victory, marking an outstanding campaign for Pierre Sage’s side.
While Lens celebrated their monumental triumph, the journey is not yet over for Nice, who must turn their focus to upcoming challenges in the Ligue 1 relegation play-off against AS Saint-Étienne.
Florian Thauvin was rightfully named the Flashscore Man of the Match for his pivotal contributions, which included a goal and an assist, helping Lens secure a memorable 3-1 victory. The first-ever Coupe de France title is not only a testament to the team’s dedication but also an exciting milestone in Lens’ football history.
