LUSTRINELLI LEAVES SWISS CHAMPIONS THUN TO TAKE OVER AT UNION BERLIN
Mauro Lustrinelli has been appointed as the new head coach of Union Berlin following his successful tenure at Thun, where he led the team to secure the Swiss league title, as confirmed by the Bundesliga club.
The 50-year-old Swiss coach takes over the reins from Marie-Louise Eta, who had stepped in as interim coach in April after the departure of Steffen Baumgart. Notably, Eta made history as the first woman to coach a men’s Bundesliga team.
Lustrinelli, who also has experience coaching youth teams for Switzerland, joined Thun in 2022. Under his leadership, the team not only triumphed in the second division but also advanced to the top league, culminating in their league championship this season.
Horst Heldt, the director of football at Union Berlin, praised Lustrinelli, stating, “Mauro has demonstrated in recent years how he can shape and develop teams. Winning the championship title with a promoted team speaks to his technical quality, but also to his ability to lead and inspire a group.” Heldt expressed confidence in Lustrinelli’s capabilities and looked forward to a productive collaboration.
Union Berlin ended the Bundesliga season in 11th place, missing the opportunity to compete in European football for the upcoming season.
