MARTIN SNATCHES DRAMATIC AUSTIN SPRINT WIN TO CLAIM LEAD IN MOTOGP STANDINGS
In an exhilarating display of skill and determination, Jorge Martin surged from seventh position on the starting grid to claim victory in the sprint race at the United States Grand Prix, thereby seizing the lead in the MotoGP standings. This remarkable achievement took place on Saturday at the Circuit of the Americas, which hosted its inaugural MotoGP event.
Martin’s ultimate triumph came after overtaking reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia during the final lap of a highly competitive race. Throughout the sprint, there were notable incidents involving other riders; Marco Bezzecchi, who had led Martin by 11 points in the riders’ standings prior to the race, crashed out of contention, while Marc Marquez also encountered difficulties, sliding off the track along with pole-sitter Fabio Di Giannantonio.
As a result of these developments, Martin entered Sunday’s main event with a one-point advantage over his teammate Bezzecchi. “I’m so happy, it’s the first time I’ve won here in MotoGP, it’s fantastic,” Martin remarked after securing his 17th sprint win, setting a new record in the process, and marking his first victory racing for Aprilia.
Reflecting on the race strategy, Martin commented, “It was risky to choose the medium tyre, but it paid off. This victory means a lot to me. Thank you so much to my team, who did a great job.” Despite starting from sixth place, Marquez faced misfortune as he crashed on the opening lap, inadvertently taking out Di Giannantonio.
Bagnaia, who had been leading for a significant portion of the race, was unable to hold off the relentless charge of Martin, who successfully maneuvered his way through the pack to claim victory. Bezzecchi, despite his success in the last four main races dating back to the previous season, faced disappointment as he failed to finish for the second time in three sprint races this season. Young talent Pedro Acosta managed to steer clear of the chaos to finish in third place.
