Medvedev and Musetti Knocked Out of Monte Carlo Masters, Zverev Survives Huge Scare

Daniil Medvedev experienced a humiliating defeat, suffering a double-bagel as he was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters. Medvedev’s performance was disappointing, characterized by a staggering 30 unforced errors and five double faults. In fact, he failed to win more than two points in any of the last 11 games, and his frustration culminated in smashing his racquet into the court four times during the match.

Berrettini, who described his performance as one of the best of his career, was delighted with the outcome. He stated, “I think I missed three shots in the entire match, and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect, and my weapons were working.” Following this victory, Berrettini, who is currently ranked 90th, will advance to face Joao Fonseca in the last 16, following Fonseca’s win over Arthur Rinderknech.

Zverev’s Narrow Escape

World number three Alexander Zverev faced a major scare in his match against Cristian Garin. Despite his aspirations to claim all three clay-court Masters 1000 titles this week, Zverev initially struggled, losing the first set and falling behind 4-0 in the third. However, showcasing resilience, he fought back to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Zverev revealed that it was a tough match requiring endurance; he had to fend off set-point against him when Garin led 5-3 in the final set. Ultimately, Zverev rallied to win five consecutive games and finished the match after two hours and fifty minutes. “My level was not there at all to be honest,” he admitted, reflecting on his performance since it was his first clay-court match in nearly a year. He is set to face unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs in the next round.

Home Hero Vacherot Defeats Musetti

In another surprising outcome, fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti fell to Valentin Vacherot in a tense match that ended 7-6 (6), 7-5. This match marked Musetti’s second outing since his retirement from the Australian Open quarter-finals due to an upper leg injury earlier this year. Last season, he finished as the runner-up in Monte Carlo but could not replicate that success in this year’s tournament.

In other results, sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced past Marin Cilic in straight sets, while 2024 finalist Casper Ruud emerged victorious over Corentin Moutet. Additionally, Czech 11th seed Jiri Lehecka made a comeback from a set down to defeat Alejandro Tabilo, although two other seeded players, Flavio Cobolli and Francisco Cerundolo, were eliminated from the tournament.
