MELBOURNE STORM LIFE MEMBER TUI KAMIKAMICA RETIRES ON MEDICAL GROUNDS
Tui Kamikamica, a distinguished captain of the Fiji rugby league, announced his retirement from professional rugby at the age of 32, following a stroke suffered earlier this year. His condition led to an emergency hospitalization in March, during which he remained hopeful of returning to play for his club, the Melbourne Storm, and leading his national team at the World Cup scheduled in Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea in October.
Regrettably, after careful medical evaluation and consideration, Kamikamica made the difficult decision to retire from the sport he loves. In his statement, he expressed profound pride in his accomplishments throughout his career, particularly his experiences representing the Melbourne Storm and captaining Fiji. “I’m incredibly proud of everything I’ve been able to achieve in the game, representing Storm and captaining my country,” he stated. His gratitude extended to the club, teammates, coaches, staff, and everyone who supported him and his family throughout his journey in rugby league.
During his career, Kamikamica participated in 142 NRL matches, all with the Melbourne Storm, since his debut in 2017. His tenure included significant highlights, including appearances in the Grand Finals of 2024 and 2025, along with 22 international matches representing Fiji.
Justin Rodski, chief executive of the Melbourne Storm, paid tribute to Kamikamica, describing him as an exceptional player, teammate, and leader. “Above all else, Tui is a wonderful person who has always put his teammates and the club first,” Rodski stated.
Prior to the Thursday night game against the Penrith Panthers, the club honored Kamikamica for his contributions and achievements, a fitting tribute to mark the end of an impactful and inspiring career in rugby league.
