Mircea Lucescu Resigns as Head Coach of Romania National Team Following World Cup Play-Off Loss
Mircea Lucescu has officially stepped down from his position as the head coach of Romania’s national football team, as confirmed by the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) on Thursday. This significant decision comes on the heels of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Turkey in the World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final, a match that took place on March 26.
The 80-year-old coach had recently experienced health issues, being hospitalized after feeling unwell during a meeting prior to a scheduled training session. This incident ultimately prevented him from participating in the team’s subsequent friendly match against Slovakia that was held on the following Tuesday.
Lucescu’s exit marks the conclusion of his second tenure as the coach of the Romanian national team. His initial term, which spanned from the early 1980s, was marked by a landmark achievement when he led Romania to qualify for the 1984 European Championship, which was the country’s first appearance in this prestigious tournament.
In light of his departure, the FRF has indicated that Lucescu is anticipated to assume a new position within the organization shortly. Concurrently, the search for his successor to guide the national team through the next qualifying cycle has already commenced.
