MLS Announces Major Schedule Transition for the 2027 Season

In an exciting development for soccer enthusiasts, Major League Soccer (MLS) has confirmed a significant change to its schedule for the 2027/28 season. According to the latest announcement, the league will implement a transitional campaign designed to realign its schedule with that of most international football leagues.

Introduction of the “MLS Sprint Season”

Starting in 2027, the MLS will adopt a “Sprint Season” format, running from February through May, allowing all 30 teams to engage in a series of 14 regular-season matches. Each team will face their conference rivals once, either at home or away, intensifying the competition as they vie for playoff positions.

Playoff Structure and Future Competitions

Following the regular season, the top eight teams from both the Eastern and Western conferences will advance to the MLS Cup playoffs. These playoffs will follow a single-elimination format, culminating in the MLS Cup final, which is scheduled for May. This new structure is expected to significantly impact the competitive landscape as teams aim not only for the cup but also for qualification to prestigious tournaments like the 2028 CONCACAF Champions Cup and the 2028 Leagues Cup against Mexican Liga MX clubs.

Adjusting to a Mid-Winter Break

Further changes will be integrated into the MLS itinerary for the 2027-28 season, including a planned mid-winter break from mid-December to early February, during which no league matches will occur. This break is designed to facilitate a smoother transition into the new schedule, encouraging better player health and fan engagement across the league.

Conclusion of the Current Season

The current season, which runs from February to December 2026, will conclude with the much-anticipated MLS Cup final on December 18, marking the end of the existing format before heading into this transformative new phase.
