Mudryk Makes Long-Awaited Return for Chelsea in Friendly Loss to Juventus

Mykhailo Mudryk took to the pitch for Chelsea for the first time in almost two years on Wednesday, although his comeback was overshadowed by a 1-0 defeat to Juventus during a friendly match held in Hong Kong.

The Ukrainian winger entered the game as a substitute for Nicolas Jackson in the 82nd minute, earning applause not only from his teammates but also from the enthusiastic Chelsea supporters who had gathered at Kai Tak Stadium, eager to see his return.

Mudryk’s absence from competitive football stretched back to November 2024 due to a doping suspension. However, just this past Friday, he received approval to resume playing after successfully appealing the ban.

Even though his appearance injected some energy into Chelsea’s game, it was Juventus who ultimately claimed victory, following a stunning goal from Edon Zhegrova, an international player from Kosovo, in the second half.

The match started off slowly, with neither team managing to create significant chances during the first half, marked by two experimental line-ups. Chelsea made the decision to bench key players like Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill, a strategic move that seemed to hinder their offensive capabilities.

A promising chance arose when Danny Welbeck, making his debut for Chelsea, missed an opportunity to score, failing to guide a flicked header on target just 11 minutes into the match.

Juventus had a near miss themselves just before the halftime whistle when midfielder Jeremie Boga unleashed a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, forcing Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez into a diving save.

In the early stages of the second half, Chelsea captain Moises Caicedo delivered a long ball that found full-back Marco Palestra, but the latter’s weak shot failed to challenge Juventus goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute when Juventus’s Kenan Yildiz set up Zhegrova, who magnificently curled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box, breaking the stalemate.

In an attempt to alter the course of the match, both teams made several substitutions. Nonetheless, Chelsea could not find the offensive spark they desperately needed, and as the match drew to a close, the contest seemed to fizzle out.
