Barcelona Open: Musetti and Rublev Progress to Quarter-Finals
Italian tennis player Lorenzo Musetti, the tournament’s second seed, advanced confidently to the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open by defeating French player Corentin Moutet in a straight-sets match. Musetti’s 6-3, 6-4 victory on Thursday showcased his skill on clay, reaffirming his status among the top players in the tournament.
Ranked number nine in the world, Musetti is now set to face either Arthur Fils or Brandon Nakashima in the next round. His advancement comes with a bit of good fortune, as he is currently the highest-seeded player remaining in the tournament, following the withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz due to a wrist injury sustained the previous Wednesday.
Musetti had a strong season last year, reaching semi-finals in significant ATP 1000 events, including Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, and making a deep run at the French Open. However, his 2023 performance has been inconsistent, and he has yet to capture an ATP title since 2022.
Recently, Musetti’s form was a concern, as he experienced early exits in both Indian Wells and the Monte Carlo Masters and had to retire from his quarter-final match against Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open. Fortunately, his victory against Martin Landaluce marked a turnaround, providing the necessary momentum heading into his match against Moutet, where he proved far too dominant for his 31st-ranked opponent.
On the same day, Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev secured his place in the quarter-finals by overcoming Lorenzo Sonego with a score of 6-2, 6-3. He is now set to clash with Tomas Machac, who benefited from Alcaraz’s withdrawal from the tournament.
