OL Lyonnes Triumphs Over Wolfsburg to Reach Women’s Champions League Semi-Finals

In a thrilling encounter on Thursday, OL Lyonnes executed a stunning comeback against Wolfsburg, securing a 4-0 victory during extra time that propelled them into the semi-finals of the Women’s Champions League with an aggregate score of 4-1. The French side’s remarkable performance manifested after overcoming a first-leg deficit, where they had previously succumbed to a 1-0 loss in Germany, courtesy of a goal from Dutch striker Lineth Beerensteyn.

Decisive Goals in Extra Time

Initially, Lyon’s young US midfielder Lily Yohannes set the tone for the match, scoring the opener just 16 minutes in with a shot that deflected into the bottom-left corner of the net. Prior to this victory, Lyon had registered a 3-1 win against Wolfsburg during the league phase, yet the German team, which boasts two Champions League titles from 2013 and 2014, managed to withstand significant pressure from the hosts throughout the regular match time.

Wolfsburg goalkeeper Stina Johannes exhibited a commendable performance, notably denying attempts from Lyon’s Melchie Dumornay, thereby keeping the scoreline level and pushing the match into extra time. However, once the additional period commenced, Lyon showcased their dominance.

Lyon’s Substitutes Make an Impact

With crucial substitutions made at the 69th minute, Lyon’s strategy began to pay off. In the 102nd minute, Dumornay netted from close range, igniting the momentum for Lyon. Just five minutes later, Damaris Egurrola added another goal, converting from a corner taken by Selma Bacha. Closing the scoring, Tabitha Chawinga secured the fourth goal for Lyon in the 119th minute through a counter-attack, sealing an emphatic win.

Captain’s Reflection on the Battle

Lyon’s captain Wendie Renard remarked on the intense nature of the matches between Lyon and Wolfsburg, stating, “We know what these Lyon versus Wolfsburg matches are like – always very competitive. They made things very difficult for us, with different tactical approaches, but I think we deserved it in the end.”

Barcelona’s Commanding Win

Earlier in the evening, in another pivotal match, Barcelona soared past rivals Real Madrid with an astonishing 6-0 victory, culminating in a 12-2 aggregate win. A standout performance by Alexia Putellas on her 500th appearance for the club highlighted the match, with significant contributions from winger Caroline Graham Hansen, who netted twice. This match also marked Barcelona’s eighth consecutive semi-final appearance, leading them to face Bayern Munich, who advanced after defeating Manchester United on aggregate.

Despite the absence of key player Aitana Bonmati, who remains sidelined, Barcelona captivated a 60,000-strong crowd at the Camp Nou, achieving the fourth-highest attendance in Women’s Champions League history.
