Joakim Oldorff Falls in Second Round of Badminton World Championships

At the 2026 Badminton World Championships taking place in New Delhi, India, Finnish player Joakim Oldorff faced a disappointing defeat in the second round of the men’s singles competition, marking the end of Finland’s participation in the tournament. Oldorff, who was the last player from Finland in the championship, succumbed to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan, a former world youth champion, in a match concluded in straight sets.

In the encounter, Oldorff, ranked 48th globally, struggled against the 21-year-old Farhan, who showcased a dominant performance. The match ended with a score of 21-12, 21-9, propelling Farhan into the last 16 of the men’s singles event. Oldorff had entered the second round after an arduous three-set battle against Vietnam’s Le Duc Phat, which hinted that taking on the 11th seed would be a significant challenge.

The first set of the match saw both competitors equal at 1-1, but it was then that Farhan steadily established a lead that Oldorff could not overcome. The second set proved to be particularly challenging for the Finnish athlete, who fell behind 0-10 almost instantaneously, effectively making a comeback nearly impossible. As a result, Farhan coasting to victory—securing Finnish players’ exit from the 2026 championships.

This defeat came after Kalle Koljonen, the only other representative of Finland in the tournament, was eliminated in the first round by Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul. Oldorff fought valiantly, narrowly losing the opening set 21-18, but unfortunately lacked the stamina and support to compete effectively in the following set, ultimately finishing with a score of 21-9.

As the tournament progresses, the spotlight shifts to other participating nations and athletes, while Finland reflects on its short-lived campaign at the World Championships.
