Kaylee McKeown’s Withdrawal from Commonwealth Games
The celebrated Australian backstroke swimmer, Kaylee McKeown, has officially announced her withdrawal from both the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, effective Friday. This decision comes after she reported experiencing significant fatigue and difficulty in breathing.
A Shocking Announcement
McKeown, who holds the titles of reigning Olympic, world, and Commonwealth champion in the 100m and 200m backstroke, expressed her devastation over missing events for which she was the overwhelming favorite. “I am gutted to medically withdraw,” the 24-year-old athlete lamented. Widely regarded as one of the greatest backstrokers in history, McKeown explained that what she initially thought was merely flu symptoms has developed into a serious fight against glandular fever.
Health Comes First
Reflecting on her health struggles leading up to the trials, McKeown revealed, “I was sick going into trials and I just have not got better, and I am worried about pushing myself so hard that I end up with chronic fatigue.” She acknowledged the difficulty of her decision, yet insisted it was ultimately the correct one for her well-being.
Support from Swimming Australia
Rohan Taylor, the head coach of Swimming Australia, emphasized the importance of prioritizing McKeown’s health over competitive aspirations. He acknowledges her competitive spirit, noting her excellent performance at the trials despite her condition. “Kaylee is a once-in-a-generation athlete. She is what we call a racer,” he remarked. Taylor expressed deep respect and support for her choice, recognizing the void her absence will create in the team due to her leadership and experience.
Team Composition for Upcoming Events
In light of McKeown’s absence, Australia is set to send a robust swimming team, comprising 59 athletes, to the Commonwealth Games scheduled in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. Additionally, 43 swimmers will represent the country at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, from August 12 to 15.
