Relebohile Mofokeng Set to Join Belgian Club Royale Union St Gilloise

In an exciting turn of events for South African football, talented playmaker Relebohile Mofokeng, aged 21, is reportedly on the brink of sealing a move to Royale Union St Gilloise, a prominent Belgian side, from his current club, Orlando Pirates. This transfer is expected to be finalized with a four-year contract, as discussions between the two clubs appear to be nearing completion, pending just a few minor details.

Mofokeng has long been a subject of interest for various clubs, with his exceptional performance in the 2025/26 season significantly enhancing his profile. He played a crucial role in leading Orlando Pirates to secure the league title, contributing both goals and assists that demonstrated his impact on the field. Throughout his tenure with the Pirates, he has made 125 appearances, finding the back of the net 29 times while also providing 31 assists. Notably, his contributions in the last season showcased an impressive tally of 11 goals and nine assists across 36 matches, reinforcing his reputation as one of the standout players in South Africa.

While primarily deployed as a winger for the Pirates, Mofokeng has also showcased his versatility by taking on a more central role as a ‘number 10’ for Bafana Bafana, the national team, under the guidance of coach Hugo Broos, who prefers utilizing him in a position closer to the goal rather than as an out-and-out wide player.

This move to Union would not be unprecedented for South African players, as notable forward Percy Tau previously had a loan stint with the team during the 2018-19 season. Furthermore, Union’s sporting director, Chris O’Loughlin, has ties to South African football, having served as an assistant coach at Orlando Pirates.

Union St Gilloise has enjoyed recent success, clinching the Belgian league title in the 2024-25 season, followed by a victory in the Belgian Cup this season, further illustrating the appeal of joining such a competitive and ambitious club for Mofokeng.
