PEDERSEN WINS CRASH-MARRED STAGE 5 SPRINT AS VAN AERT SEALS OVERALL VICTORY IN DANISH TOUR
In an exhilarating conclusion to the Tour of Denmark, Rasmus Sojberg Pedersen clinched victory in the final stage, sprinting ahead amid a chaotic backdrop that saw a significant portion of the peloton involved in a crash on the last corner. Despite the turmoil, Wout van Aert, riding for Visma-Lease a Bike, managed to secure his overall victory by finishing safely in 11th place, having dominated the earlier stages of the race.
The day of the final sprint was marred by mishaps, including a substantial crash that unfolded just before the finish. Jensen Plowright from Alpecin-Premier Tech attempted to initiate the sprint but soon found himself too fatigued to maintain his lead. Seizing the opportunity, Pedersen maneuvered through a small opening on his right, allowing him to gain a strategic advantage while Max Walscheid made his move on the opposite side. Ultimately, Pedersen’s speed was unmatched, enabling him to outpace Walscheid and fend off the challenge from Tom Crabbe, who was closing in rapidly.
Wout van Aert’s triumph marked his first overall stage race win in three years, further solidifying his return to form after a significant injury that had sidelined him during the Tour de France. Reflecting on his performance, he highlighted the significance of achieving three consecutive stage wins, expressing that it was an unprecedented experience for him. “I’ll especially remember the three consecutive stage wins. That’s something I’ve never experienced before, and—particularly after a long period of training following my injury—it wasn’t something I had expected. So that will certainly stay with me,” he stated, underscoring his resilience and determination.
Van Aert’s teammate, Christophe Laporte, was close to capturing the third-place spot in the overall standings but was ultimately unable to surpass Henrik Breiner Pedersen, who maintained his position on the podium. In the general classification, Lukas Kobis from Slovakia achieved a commendable second place, showcasing strong performance throughout the tour.
