SOCCEROOS COACH POPOVIC EXTENDS CONTRACT THROUGH TO 2027 ASIAN CUP
Tony Popovic, the head coach of the Socceroos, has officially signed a contract extension that secures his position until the 2027 Asian Cup. This announcement comes just ahead of Australia’s opening match against Turkey in the World Cup.
Popovic took over as the Socceroos coach in 2024, assuming the role previously held by Graham Arnold, who is currently coaching Iraq and is also involved in the World Cup. Since his appointment, Popovic has managed the team in 18 matches, achieving 10 victories, 4 draws, and 4 losses.
Expressing his enthusiasm about continuing in his role, Popovic stated, “I’m delighted that I will continue to coach the Socceroos through to the Asian Cup.” He is currently in California with the team, preparing for their Group D clash on Saturday in Vancouver.
Popovic further emphasized the importance of aligning both long-term goals for the team and short-term achievements, noting that his immediate focus was on qualifying for the World Cup upon his arrival.
The Asian Cup is set to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, following the conclusion of the World Cup. This extension of Popovic’s contract was deemed significant for Football Australia, as its Chief Martin Kugeler expressed, “Securing Tony’s contract extension on the eve of the World Cup is a fantastic outcome.” Kugeler remarked that while the imminent focus is on the World Cup, this move allows Football Australia to plan confidently for the time leading into the Asian Cup.
This World Cup marks Australia’s sixth consecutive appearance, and they find themselves in a challenging group alongside co-hosts the United States and Paraguay.
