SOUTH AFRICA AND CZECH REPUBLIC RENEW BRIEF BUT SIGNIFICANT RIVALRY

The upcoming match between South Africa and the Czech Republic in Group A of the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for Thursday in Atlanta, marks a significant moment in the history of their sporting rivalry. Both teams are driven by the necessity of a victory after suffering losses in their opening matches against Mexico and South Korea, respectively.

This encounter rekindles memories of the only other meeting between the two teams, which took place during the 1997 Confederations Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That particular match is remembered for its dramatic finish, ending in a 2-2 draw. The game had far-reaching consequences for South Africa’s national team, leading to the sacking of coach Clive Barker, even though he had steered the team to their World Cup debut the following year.

During the memorable 1997 match, South Africa was led by the late Sizwe Motaung, despite the presence of notable players like Neil Tovey, Shoes Moshoeu, and Doctor Khumalo. The Czechs took the lead twice, but South Africa managed to equalize following each of their goals, including a stunning strike from current assistant coach Helman Mkhalele, who scored the final equalizer from a distance of 25 yards shortly after a Czech player was sent off.

After that game, South Africa faced further difficulties, losing to both the United Arab Emirates and Uruguay in subsequent matches, which contributed to a tumultuous period for the team and ultimately led to Barker’s dismissal. The federation, in a bid to regain stability, appointed Philippe Troussier as the new coach, a decision that proved to be disastrous as his tenure was fraught with challenges.

The only other noted connection between South African football and the Czech Republic is a distant one involving referee Radek Prihoda, who officiated a friendly match in 2012 where South Africa suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Poland.

As these two teams prepare to clash once more, the stakes are high, and both sides will be eager to secure a much-needed win to keep their World Cup aspirations alive.

The Teams:

Czech Republic: Pavel Srníček; Michal Horňák, Zdeněk Svoboda, Karel Rada, Petr Vlček; Pavel Nedvěd, Jiří Němec, Radek Bejbl, Edvard Lasota; Pavel Kuka (Radek Slončík, 89’), Vladimír Šmicer (Karel Poborský, 84’). Coach: Dušan Uhrin.
