SOUTH KOREA EARN NARROW VICTORY AGAINST EL SALVADOR IN FINAL WORLD CUP WARM-UP

South Korea’s national football team achieved a hard-fought 1-0 victory over El Salvador in their last friendly match before the upcoming World Cup. This encounter took place in Utah on Wednesday and served as a crucial tune-up for the tournament starting next week.

Lee Dong-gyeong found the back of the net just ten minutes into the second half, after a tightly contested first half where South Korea struggled offensively. This win followed a dominant 5-0 triumph over Trinidad and Tobago just a week prior, marking a positive shift in the team’s form as they prepare for the World Cup.

Head coach Hong Myung-bo expressed optimism regarding the team’s performance, stating, “We had some difficulties offensively early in the match but I think this match will be of huge help for us. Our players must have learned a great deal today by playing this type of team.”

South Korea, drawn into Group A of the World Cup, will face tough opponents including the Czech Republic, South Africa, and co-hosts Mexico, beginning their campaign against the Czech Republic in Guadalajara on June 11.

Notably, team captain Son Heung-min began the match on the bench but made a significant impact shortly after entering the field, just five minutes after Lee’s goal, demonstrating his leadership and skill during crucial moments. Despite a slow start to the season at Los Angeles FC, where he scored only twice so far, Son’s international tally remains impressive at 56 goals in 144 appearances, now just two shy of the legendary Cha Bum-kun’s record for South Korea.

Defender Cho Wi-je made a notable debut as a second-half substitute during the match. Having recently been called up to replace the injured Cho Yu-min, Cho Wi-je played admirably, earning praise from coach Hong, who noted, “I think he played well stepping in for an injured player. He helped the team tremendously.”

This match not only serves as a confidence booster for the South Korean squad but also provides valuable experience and insight as they gear up for the intense competition that lies ahead in the World Cup.
