Springboks Captain Kolisi Cleared for Second Test Against All Blacks
Siya Kolisi, the inspirational captain of the Springboks, has successfully recovered from his hamstring injury and is set to lead South Africa against New Zealand in the highly anticipated second Test this Saturday in Cape Town. This news comes directly from head coach Rassie Erasmus, signaling a significant boost for the team.
Injury Struggles
The 35-year-old openside flanker has faced a challenging season marked by injuries, causing him to miss key Nations Championship matches against England, Scotland, and Wales earlier in July. Kolisi’s recent return to action in a match against Argentina in Buenos Aires was cut short just 25 minutes in due to another hamstring setback.
Testing Recovery
Erasmus noted the seriousness of Kolisi’s previous injury, indicating that the player had sustained a grade two hamstring tear. “It takes a little time to recover, and that is why we have been cautious,” he explained to reporters. Following a rigorous testing routine, Kolisi demonstrated his fitness by running at full speed earlier this week without experiencing any discomfort, clearing the way for his return to the field.
Team Adjustments
In a strategic reshuffle, Paul de Villiers, who played in the first Test against the All Blacks last Saturday, has been dropped from the matchday 23 to make way for Kolisi’s return. The Springboks will aim to bounce back from their opening loss to New Zealand, where they fell 33-16 in Johannesburg.
Upcoming Matches
After the clash in Cape Town, the series will continue with a third Test in Johannesburg on September 5, followed by a fourth Test scheduled for September 12 in Baltimore, USA. The series presents crucial opportunities for the Springboks to solidify their squad ahead of future international competitions.
