Elina Svitolina Shocks Fans with Early Exit at Wimbledon
Elina Svitolina, the eighth seed from Ukraine, faced a surprising defeat in the opening round of Wimbledon, being knocked out by her compatriot Daria Snigur with a score of 7-5, 6-2. This match, which took place on Tuesday, marks yet another hurdle in Svitolina’s pursuit of her first Grand Slam title.
Despite initially starting strong with a commanding 4-0 lead, Svitolina was unable to maintain her momentum. Snigur capitalized on the opportunity, securing the first set with relative ease despite the early challenge. Ranked 77th in the world, Snigur’s unyielding flat shots proved decisive as she broke Svitolina’s serve early in the second set, putting the pressure squarely on the more experienced player.
The dynamics changed significantly as the match progressed. As the sun began to set, Svitolina’s performance faltered, allowing Snigur to string together an impressive series of games. In just 68 minutes, Snigur achieved a milestone victory, marking her first win against a top-10 opponent since 2023. This achievement set her up for a subsequent match against French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.
Snigur expressed elation after her victory, likening the experience to that of a football player celebrating on the pitch. “Every win at Wimbledon is very special for me. This is my favourite tournament. It’s amazing. It’s an incredible feeling,” she said. “I celebrated like I’m a football player as I watched a lot of matches at the World Cup.” She admitted to feeling anxious during the match, particularly given the presence of a sizable audience supporting her and Svitolina, whom she regards as the best player in Ukraine.
In the wake of her defeat, Svitolina acknowledged that she wasn’t performing at her peak. “I wouldn’t say I was at 100% as I wanted to be,” she confessed, hinting at the physical toll taken by a demanding clay season prior to Wimbledon. She reflected on the unpredictable nature of grass courts, explaining how they can present challenges even for seasoned players like herself. Despite her disappointment, Svitolina remained optimistic about the future: “For me, I try to look at the positive side. Now I have some time to rest, finally,” she concluded, looking ahead after a challenging series of matches leading into the tournament.
