Sweden Secures First Victory in World Championship Against Denmark

In a decisive match during the 2026 IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship, Sweden achieved their first win in Group B, dominating Denmark with a score of 6-2 in Fribourg, Switzerland. After suffering a 5-3 defeat against Canada in their opening game, Sweden bounced back strongly, while Denmark continued to search for their first points after also losing 4-1 to the Czech Republic just two days prior.

The breakthrough for Sweden came early in the match, specifically in the 10th minute, when Viggo Bjorck skillfully assisted Mattias Ekholm, who created a clear opportunity to score the opening goal. Although Denmark’s Linus Karlsson received a penalty for interference, providing Denmark with a chance to regroup, the Swedish defense held strong and increased their lead shortly after regaining full strength. Lucas Raymond performed effectively behind the Danish net, assisting Oliver Ekman-Larsson to find the back of the net, extending Sweden’s lead to 2-0.

As the game progressed, Denmark demonstrated resilience. However, they could not capitalize effectively, particularly after a cross-checking penalty involving Daniel Baastrup toward the end of the first period put them at a disadvantage. Despite the pressure, Sweden maintained their momentum. Early in the second period, following another powerplay opportunity enabled by a penalty against Nick Olesen, Sweden’s Raymond fired a quick shot from a tight angle, resulting in a 3-0 score. Just three minutes later, Jacob Silfverberg fought valiantly to maintain possession and put Sweden ahead 4-0, with collective contributions from Robert Hagg and Carl Grundstrom.

Though Denmark managed to score a powerplay goal through Joachim Blichfeld, this minor setback did not deter Sweden. Shortly after, Ivar Stenberg provided Bjorck with another opportunity, allowing him to strike again and record a historic moment as Sweden’s youngest scorer at the World Championship at the age of 18 years and 66 days.

The third period saw tensions rise as multiple penalties were handed out for fighting. Denmark finally managed to score another goal, with Mikkel Aagaard finding the net during a powerplay. Nonetheless, Sweden quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback when Karlsson scored with five minutes remaining after an assist from Simon Holmstrom, concluding the match at 6-2.

With this victory, Sam Hallam’s squad moved to fourth place in Group B, trailing Canada and Slovakia by three points, and just one point behind the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Denmark remains at the bottom of the standings, with only their goal difference keeping them above Italy.

Both teams are scheduled to return to the ice on Monday, January 18th, with Denmark set to face Canada while Sweden will take on the Czech Republic.

Austrian Team Maintains Perfect Start Against Hungary

In another exciting fixture in Group A held in Zurich, Austria continued their strong performance, achieving their second consecutive victory with a 4-2 win over Hungary. This puts them alongside Switzerland and Finland, who are also enjoying back-to-back successes this tournament. Despite the defeat, Hungary remains above Great Britain on goal differential after suffering two losses thus far.

The match began with a balanced play, as both teams were tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes; a goal from Istvan Sofron nullified Vinzenz Rohrer’s opener for Austria. However, Austria surged ahead in the final period. Thimo Nickl scored twice after Dominic Zwerger’s powerplay goal had regained the lead for Austria, despite Peter Vincze’s late attempt to score a consolation goal for Hungary.
