Taylor Fritz Dominates Rafael Jodar to Secure ATP Washington Title
In a compelling showdown at the ATP Washington tournament, Taylor Fritz, currently ranked as the world number 10, showcased his skill and resilience by defeating 19-year-old Rafael Jodar with a final score of 7-6 (7/2), 6-4. This victory marks Fritz’s first ATP title of 2026 and his 11th career title overall, with his previous championship win dating back to Eastbourne last year.
The match, initially scheduled for Sunday, was delayed due to heavy rainfall, which also postponed the WTA final between Jessica Pegula and Alexandra Eala to the following Monday. Fritz, seeded third in this competitive 500-level hard court event, encountered a fierce challenge from Jodar, ranked 24th, as he dug deep to secure the title.
Fritz started strong, taking charge during the first-set tiebreaker and establishing a quick 3-0 lead in the second set thanks to two service breaks. However, he faced a setback when he committed a double fault during the fourth game, allowing Jodar to break back. The young Spaniard made a commendable effort to climb out of a 0-30 deficit, holding his serve to close the gap to 3-2.
Despite showing promise, Jodar struggled to find another break against Fritz. He managed to hold serve to 5-4, which put pressure on Fritz to serve for the match. This moment was slightly delayed as Jodar received treatment for his left wrist after an earlier fall in the ninth game.
The final game turned into an intense battle, with Fritz missing two match points at 40-15. Nevertheless, he regained his composure, showcasing a powerful forehand that eventually earned him another match point. Jodar demonstrated admirable tenacity by saving two additional match points, even managing to earn a break point; however, Fritz responded with another well-timed forehand winner to fend off the challenge.
After one hour and 49 minutes of high-stakes action, Fritz clinched victory as Jodar faltered with a couple of misfired forehands. Overcome with emotion, Fritz collapsed onto the court before rising to acknowledge the supportive crowd.
This final highlighted both players’ skills, with Jodar aiming for his second ATP title after his victory in Morocco earlier in April. Reaching the final assures Jodar a rise to a career-high 15th place in the ATP rankings, a testament to his promising future in tennis.
