Tsitsipas and Hurkacz Advance While Dimitrov and Venus Suffer Defeats
During the Cincinnati tournament, a major build-up to the US Open, notable developments unfolded as Stefani Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz progressed to the next round. The competition, filled with 64 participants in both men’s and women’s draws, highlights the athletes’ performances as they gear up for the prestigious event commencing on August 30th.
In a disappointing turn for fans, Grigor Dimitrov, the 2017 champion, faced an early exit against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez. Despite initially leading 4-1 in the third set, Dimitrov succumbed to a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat, losing his grip on the match as Baez claimed the final five games. Now ranked 138th globally, Dimitrov was relying on a wild card for his position in the tournament, hoping for his first victory on Cincinnati soil in five years.
Conversely, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who reached the finals in 2022, managed to secure a tight victory over French player Valentin Royer with a score of 7-6(4), 7-5. Tsitsipas’s journey to the second round was marked by a struggle to finish the match, almost letting a lead slip as Royer mounted a comeback to tie at 5-5 after being 5-2 down. Nevertheless, Tsitsipas eventually broke Royer and advanced to face second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in an upcoming match.

Hubert Hurkacz, a semi-finalist in 2023, continued his ascent by defeating Sho Shimabukuro in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini returned to the courts, claiming victory over Thomas Droguet in a three-set match marred by injury, with scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Venus Williams’ Struggles Continue
On the women’s side, the tournament saw a gloomy continuation for Venus Williams as she recorded her 14th consecutive loss, falling to Colombia’s Emilia Arango. The defeat marked a stark moment in her career, losing in 66 minutes with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-2. The seven-time Grand Slam champion’s current ranking has plummeted to 615th, reflecting her recent challenges on the court. Williams was granted a wild card for this event, reminiscent of her past success here over a decade ago, but she faced struggles throughout the season, with 11 losses under her belt.
In a further display of dominance, Czech player Sara Bejlek overwhelmed former champion Karolina Pliskova, conceding only two games in a staggering first-round loss to Bejlek, who triumphed with a score of 6-0, 6-2.
