TURKEY SEALS SPOT AT WORLD CUP FOR FIRST TIME IN 24 YEARS WITH SCRAPPY WIN AT KOSOVO

In a historic encounter, Turkey has qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2002, marking a significant achievement for the national team. This milestone came after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kosovo in Pristina, extending Turkey’s success to four wins in their four meetings with the Balkan side.

Kosovo, who became FIFA and UEFA members in 2016, had been on the brink of World Cup qualification for the first time in their history and came close with an exhilarating 4-3 victory against Slovakia. Nonetheless, they failed to capitalize on that momentum against Turkey, who were keen to end their lengthy 24-year absence from the prestigious tournament.

The match kicked off with both teams displaying immense hunger and determination. It wasn’t long before the first significant action took place; within the opening five minutes, Arijanet Muric, the Kosovo goalkeeper, confidently caught a low shot from Turkey’s Kerem Aktürkoğlu. However, clear chances proved elusive in the first half as both defenses showcased their resilience, executing timely blocks and interceptions.

Although both teams attempted long-range shots, it was evident that clear opportunities were sparse. Turkey’s Orkan Kökçü narrowly missed the target, while Uğurcan Çakır, Turkey’s goalkeeper, exhibited remarkable alertness, making a crucial tip over the bar from Fisnik Asllani’s attempt.

After half-time, Turkey initiated their offensive strategy with renewed vigor. Just ten minutes into the second half, they broke the deadlock. Kenan Yıldız, who had been quiet until that point, delivered a pullback that set up Kökçü, whose effort was neatly finished off by Aktürkoğlu from close range, putting Turkey ahead.

The early second-half goal rejuvenated the Turkish players’ confidence, as they sought to extend their lead. Only a superb save from Muric prevented Yıldız from scoring again when he unleashed a powerful shot aimed at the top corner. Kosovo, trailing behind, pressed forward but struggled to apply significant pressure on Turkey’s defense and goalkeeper Çakır.

Florent Muslija tested Çakır with a promising shot from outside the box, but it veered wide of the post. Kosovo’s best chance came shortly after, with Çakır expertly parrying Asllani’s low shot away from danger. Despite Kosovo’s commendable effort, they ultimately fell short at the critical moment.

With this victory, Turkey can now dream of replicating their remarkable semi-final performance from the 2002 World Cup. Their triumph marks an unbeaten streak of six matches, and with the quality of players at their disposal, they may emerge as dark horses in the upcoming tournament in North America.

Uğurcan Çakır was recognized as the Flashscore Man of the Match for his crucial contributions throughout the game, ensuring Turkey’s defense held strong against Kosovo’s attacks.
