TWENTE CHALLENGED AFTER NARROW DEFEAT TO QARABAG IN EUROPEAN CONTEST
In a critical UEFA Conference League qualifying match held on Thursday, FC Twente faced a significant setback, losing 1-0 to the Azerbaijani team Qarabag at their home ground. This defeat places Twente in a precarious position as they struggle to advance to the League Phase.
Having recently settled for a disappointing 3-3 draw against Dunajska Streda in the away leg of the same qualifying round, FC Twente was eager to bounce back in front of their home supporters. The team’s star striker, Wout Weghorst, remained pivotal as they faced Qarabag, who were seen as formidable opponents in this crucial clash.
The first half unfolded in a balanced manner, with neither team managing to capitalize on their opportunities. Qarabag held slightly more possession, yet it was Twente that sought to exert pressure on Qarabag’s goalkeeper, Martin Ziomislic, but to no avail.
The game’s turning point came seven minutes into the second half when Qarabag managed to score. A mistake by Marko Pjaca in the midfield allowed Jaly Mouaddib to exploit the space down the left flank. He delivered an incisive cross to Musa Qurbanly, who then set up Kady Borges for a swift and clinical finish from close range.
In the aftermath of conceding, FC Twente intensified their efforts to find an equalizer, with players Daouda Weidmann and Bart van Rooij coming close on several occasions. However, despite their persistent attempts, Twente was unable to find the back of the net, leaving them with nothing from the match.
Qarabag will now take their slender lead into the second leg of the tie, set to be contested in Agdam on Thursday, August 27th, where they will aim to defend their advantage and secure progression in the tournament.
