Tyler Tolbert Breaks Royals Record with Nine Hits in Nine Straight At-Bats

On Tuesday evening, Tyler Tolbert, the 28-year-old utility player for the Kansas City Royals, made headlines by achieving an extraordinary feat against the New York Mets. He recorded his ninth consecutive hit in nine straight at-bats, thereby breaking a franchise record that had stood the test of time.

In the second inning, Tolbert launched a two-run home run off pitcher Kodai Senga, which not only tied the record but also marked a significant moment in his burgeoning career. He followed this impressive display by hitting a one-out single in the fourth inning, officially breaking the previous record. This game also represented back-to-back matches in which he hit at least one home run, bringing his season total to two.

In a remarkable update, Tolbert has now garnered a total of 12 hits in 12 at-bats with three additional singles, culminating in a perfect five-for-five night. This performance has positioned him to tie the all-time MLB record for consecutive hits.

With his recent hits, Tolbert has elevated his batting average to an impressive .404 for the season. Alongside the two home runs, he has amassed five runs batted in (RBI) and has successfully stolen nine bases across 32 games played this year.

It is noteworthy that despite being 28 years old, Tolbert is in only his second season in Major League Baseball. In 2025, he had an impressive run, hitting .280 with one home run, six RBIs, and an impressive 21 stolen bases over the course of 64 games. His performance in Triple-A before his major league call-up was equally strong, with a slash line of .333/.383/.429 across 31 games.

Currently, the Kansas City Royals find themselves struggling this season with a record of 37 wins and 54 losses, hovering just a game above last place in the American League, notably ahead of the Los Angeles Angels, who hold a record of 36 wins and 55 losses. Tolbert’s emergence as a standout player amidst the team’s challenges offers a glimmer of hope for the franchise.
