In his first international start, Amatosero was shown a red card in the 33rd minute of the Wallabies’ close 35-32 victory over Japan. The disciplinary action was the result of a high tackle on Warner Dearns of Japan, deemed serious enough by the SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) to classify it as foul play, meriting a starting penalty of six weeks.
Sanction Mitigation
However, due to Amatosero’s guilty plea, expressions of remorse, and a previously clean disciplinary record, the original six-week suspension was reduced to three weeks. There exists the possibility for a further reduction to just two weeks if he opts to participate in a World Rugby intervention programme, colloquially known as ‘tackle school.’ This program focuses on the technical aspects of tackling to help prevent future infractions.
Impact of the Suspension
As a result of this ban, Amatosero will be unable to participate in the upcoming home game against Japan scheduled to take place in Townsville. He will also miss Gordon’s first Shute Shield final on August 22. Nonetheless, should he engage in the coaching programme, he may still be eligible to return for Australia’s match against Argentina on August 29.
