ANISIMOVA MAKES STRONG RETURN TO WIMBLEDON
Amanda Anisimova, last year’s Wimbledon runner-up, marked her return to the prestigious Grand Slam with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over qualifier Lina Gjorcheska in the first round on Tuesday. Anisimova, having previously suffered an embarrassing defeat with a score of 6-0, 6-0 against Iga Swiatek in the previous year’s final, showed resilience and skill as she dominated her North Macedonian opponent on Court Two.
GJORCHESKA’S HISTORIC APPEARANCE
Lina Gjorcheska, making her debut as the first player from North Macedonia to compete in a Grand Slam main draw, tried to put up a fight towards the end of the match, but Anisimova proved too formidable. The entire contest lasted just 61 minutes, during which Gjorcheska’s attempts to extend the match met with resistance from the more experienced Anisimova.
ANISIMOVA’S THOUGHTS ON THE MATCH
Reflecting on her performance, Anisimova stated, “It’s not easy playing a qualifier who has had a few matches under her belt. She played great, and since we haven’t faced each other before, it was a tricky first round. I’m super excited to be back here.” This excitement stemmed partly from pleasant memories associated with Wimbledon, which Anisimova hopes to carry forward as she progresses in the tournament.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next, Anisimova is set to face either Petra Marcinko or Sofia Kenin in the second round, signaling a crucial step in her campaign to reclaim her standing on the court after the difficult experiences of the previous year.
