Wimbledon to Implement Video Review Technology in Upcoming Championships
In a significant move, Wimbledon has announced the introduction of video review technology for this year’s tournament, allowing players the opportunity to challenge specific judgement calls made by chair umpires. This advancement was confirmed by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) on Saturday, marking a pivotal enhancement to the game’s officiating process.
Scope of the Technology
While players will not be able to contest decisions made by the electronic line calling (ELC) system that was integrated into Wimbledon last year, the new video review process will facilitate examinations of various other critical situations. This includes whether the ball has bounced multiple times or if it has made contact with the player’s racket or body.
Challenge Protocols
According to the AELTC, players will have the right to review specific calls from the chair umpire that pertain to crucial points, such as ‘not-up,’ ‘foul shot,’ or ‘touch’ decisions. Challenges can be made either immediately after the call during a point-ending situation or right after a point has concluded, particularly in instances of hindrance.
Unlimited Reviews
In a notable feature of this system, players will not be capped on the number of reviews they can request throughout a match, giving them ample opportunity to ensure that contentious decisions are evaluated fairly.
Implementation on Show Courts
The video review technology will be accessible across six main show courts at Wimbledon, including the prestigious Centre Court and Court One, ensuring that athletes can utilize this new capability in high-stakes matches.
Enhancements to Visual Indicators
Furthermore, spectators and players will benefit from enhanced visual indicators for the ELC system. Scoreboards across all courts will now indicate ‘out’ and ‘fault’ calls, improving clarity on decisions made during play.
Upcoming Championship Dates
This year’s Wimbledon tournament is set to commence on June 29th, promising an exciting display of tennis as players adapt to and engage with the newly introduced technology.
