Charlie McAvoy Joins Bruins Royalty After Goal Against Flyers

Charlie McAvoy has made history by joining hockey legend Ray Bourque as the second Boston Bruins defenceman in the last four decades to achieve a remarkable nine-point streak, highlighted by scoring his fifth goal of the season during a match against the Philadelphia Flyers. Despite his personal achievement, the Bruins faced a setback, losing the game 3-1.

This year, McAvoy was instrumental in securing a gold medal for Team USA at the Olympic Games, further cementing his status as a top performer in the league. Over the course of his impressive streak, he recorded one goal and an impressive ten assists, elevating his overall season totals to five goals and 36 assists across 47 games played so far.

At 28 years old, McAvoy’s entire nine-year NHL career has been with the Boston Bruins, who picked him 14th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut the following season and quickly distinguished himself, earning a place on the 2017-2018 All-Rookie Team after totaling seven goals and 25 assists in 63 games. His incredible performance also earned him recognition as a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the league’s top rookie.

Since those early days, McAvoy has developed into one of the NHL’s premier defencemen, consistently achieving at least 35 assists in four out of the last five seasons. Notably, he set a personal best by scoring 12 goals in the ongoing 2023-2024 season.

With just 23 games remaining in the current season, McAvoy is just 11 assists away from setting a new career high in assists for a single season. To date, he has totaled 65 goals and 276 assists in 550 games played.
