Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase on Unpaid Leave Amid Pitch-Rigging Scandal
Cleveland Guardians pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase have been placed on unpaid non-disciplinary leave by Major League Baseball (MLB) following accusations of involvement in pitch-rigging activities intended to assist gamblers. This decision was made public on Friday and reflects the gravity of the federal charges they face.
The duo, both hailing from the Dominican Republic, had previously been put on paid non-disciplinary leave by MLB in July of the prior year. However, the stakes escalated when they were indicted last November on charges of federal conspiracy in New York. The indictments suggest that Ortiz and Clase allegedly conspired to determine the types and speeds of pitches that could favor Dominican gamblers, effectively manipulating the game’s outcomes for financial gains.
Both players have asserted their innocence, entering pleas of not guilty to the charges against them. In light of ongoing legal proceedings, MLB has reached an agreement with its players’ association, which stipulates that the Guardians are not obliged to continue paying the salaries of Ortiz and Clase during this suspension, particularly with the onset of the new season just around the corner.
According to a statement released by the Major League Baseball, the ongoing situation remains under legal scrutiny, and the players will remain on non-disciplinary leave without pay until further notice. Importantly, the agreement reached does not imply any admission of guilt by either Ortiz or Clase. MLB has been actively collaborating with federal law enforcement since the initial stages of its investigation into the matter and intends to refrain from further comments until all inquiries are concluded.
