Ghana Announces Departure of Coach Otto Addo Prior to 2026 World Cup

In a significant development just 72 days before the commencement of the 2026 World Cup, Ghana has officially parted ways with head coach Otto Addo, as confirmed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday. The decision to dismiss Addo came shortly after the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat against Germany in Stuttgart during their final preparations for the tournament, which is set to take place across North America next summer.

This defeat followed another disappointing performance, where Ghana lost 5-1 to Austria just days earlier. The GFA’s statement clearly outlined the immediacy of the decision, stating, “The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.”

Otto Addo, who was appointed as the head coach back in March 2024, faced challenges during his tenure, particularly in failing to qualify the national team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite having notable Premier League players such as Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus available for selection. Throughout his time in charge, Addo led the team to eight victories and nine losses over the course of 22 matches.

As Ghana prepares for its fifth World Cup appearance, the team finds itself placed in an challenging Group L, where they will face formidable opponents like Croatia, England, and Panama. With this recent coaching change, the future strategy and direction of the Black Stars will be of keen interest as they gear up for this prestigious event.
