Liiga Playoffs: SaiPa Enacts Revenge on Assat After Thrilling Contest

In an electrifying episode of the Liiga playoffs, SaiPa managed to secure a vital victory against Assat in what proved to be a gripping semi-final match. Following a marathon of five periods that saw both teams battling fiercely on the ice, SaiPa triumphed with a score of 3-2, thereby leveling the series at 1-1. This achievement was especially significant after their previous encounter, where Assat had taken the upper hand in a record-breaking match lasting 125 minutes.

The initial period of the match gave little indication of the fireworks to come, as both teams observed a stalemate and neither managed to make headway on the scoreboard. This was highlighted by SaiPa’s inability to capitalize on a power play opportunity when Assat’s Aleksi Anttalainen was penalized for interference. The tension was palpable as both sides vied for dominance.

However, the scenario shifted dramatically in the second period when Assat’s Otsu Ylitalo broke the deadlock with a goal just minutes into the frame. Yet, SaiPa retaliated effectively, with Otto Kivenmaki scoring from a seemingly impossible angle that evened the match before the game’s midpoint.

As the game progressed into the third period, SaiPa took the lead, thanks to a skillful setup from Kivenmaki that allowed Saku Salminen to find the net. But Assat was not prepared to back down; Feetu Knihti commandeered a late equalizer, keeping the momentum tense and vibrant as the game moved into overtime.

The first overtime session saw a flurry of opportunities, with the Aces outshooting SaiPa 9-5, but unable to find the crucial goal. The determination of both teams led to a second overtime, which extended the excitement further. Finally, after 95 minutes and 39 seconds of exhilarating hockey, it was Karri Aho who sealed the victory for SaiPa, netting the decisive goal and ensuring the series would be tightly contested.

Ilves Claims Two-Game Lead Over KalPa in Quarter-Final Series

In another pivotal playoff showdown, Ilves has taken a commanding lead in their quarter-final series against defending champions KalPa. After an earlier win on the opening night, Ilves continued their form by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to clinch a dramatic 4-3 win after overtime. This victory was especially impressive given KalPa’s desire to rebound on home ice.

The game was charged from the outset, with KalPa’s Jaakko Rissanen converting a power play opportunity early on, a result of a penalty against Samuli Ratinen. KalPa extended their lead to 2-0 shortly after with a goal by Jaakko Lantta, putting Ilves in a tight spot. However, the visitors showed resilience as Lukas Jasek set up Carl Kingberg to bring the score to 2-1 before Matic Torok leveled the match on a power play.

Ilves persisted, ensuring that their ability to seize control did not falter even as moments of adversity arose, including a disallowed goal for Erik Borg. In a thrilling climax, Simon Johansson clinched victory for Ilves in the extra period, propelling them to a 2-0 series lead against KalPa.

With the playoffs escalating in intensity and competition, both teams will face off again on Saturday, April 4th, in matches hosted by SaiPa in Lappeenranta and Ilves in Tampere.
