NORTH CAROLINA TO HIRE FORMER DENVER NUGGETS HEAD COACH MICHAEL MALONE
In a significant move within the NCAA basketball landscape, the University of North Carolina is preparing to appoint Michael Malone as their new head coach, following the dismissal of Hubert Davis nearly two weeks earlier. Malone, who is now 57 years old, distinguished himself during his tenure with the Denver Nuggets, where he led the team to its first-ever NBA Championship in the 2022-2023 season and established himself as the franchise’s all-time leader in wins with a remarkable total of 471 victories.
Before his illustrious time in Denver, Malone spent a decade honing his skills as an assistant coach in the NBA, then transitioned to head coaching with the Sacramento Kings, where he served for two seasons. However, it was his ten-year tenure with the Nuggets that truly defined his career, during which the team recorded only two seasons with losing records—his initial two seasons. Following those challenging first years, the Nuggets consistently achieved at least 46 wins per season, showcasing Malone’s ability to cultivate a successful team culture.
As for the North Carolina Tar Heels, they have faced consecutive disappointments in the NCAA tournament under Davis, failing to advance past the first round in both years. Despite leading UNC to the Finals in his debut season, which culminated in a narrow loss to Kansas with a score of 72-69, the following years were increasingly challenging. The team failed to qualify for the tournament for just the fifth time since 2000 and managed only a Sweet 16 appearance the subsequent year, during which they were eliminated by Alabama. This season was particularly notable as the Tar Heels clinched the ACC Championship under Davis, the only one during his coaching tenure.
Malone’s return to college coaching marks a significant shift, as he has not been involved in the collegiate basketball scene since his role as an assistant at Manhattan College in 2001. His extensive experience in the NBA could infuse the Tar Heels with a fresh perspective and a renewed competitive spirit as they look to reclaim their status as a powerhouse in college basketball.
