Italian Golfer Andrea Pavan Recovering After Elevator Shaft Accident

Italian professional golfer Andrea Pavan, known for his achievements on the DP World Tour, is actively working on his recovery following a severe accident that resulted in significant injuries. The accident occurred in February 2026 while he was at his accommodation in South Africa, near the Stellenbosch Golf Club, when he attempted to call an elevator. Unfortunately, the elevator car was not present, and he fell three stories down the open shaft.

Injuries and Recovery Timeline

Pavan, who has claimed victory twice on the European Tour, suffered from multiple fractures in his back and a serious shoulder injury that necessitated surgical intervention. At 37 years old, he faces a challenging recovery process. Pavan has shared with the BBC his hopes of regaining full functionality in his swing within a year, contingent upon the healing of the affected bones and joint. He explained the timeline: “In about three months, we will assess the bone healing, while by six months we expect complete bone healing to evaluate joint movement,” he noted.

Medical Concerns and Optimism

The golfer expressed concerns regarding possible complications that may arise during the healing process, including damage to other tissues that could necessitate another surgery, as well as the risk of necrosis due to insufficient blood flow to the bones. Despite these uncertainties, Pavan remains optimistic about his recovery, citing encouraging signs thus far. He emphasized the shoulder’s demanding nature: “It’s just so new and such a big injury, there are a lot of unknowns,” he mentioned, demonstrating a balanced awareness of the challenges ahead.

Day-by-Day Improvement

Pavan is currently recuperating in Texas, focusing on daily progress and maintaining a positive mindset. “I can only do my best to improve and take it day by day,” he assured, hopeful for a quicker return to competitive golf. His determination to recover fully embodies the resilience of an athlete, committed to overcoming adversity and returning to the sport he loves.
