Marseille Claims Europa League Spot with Strong Performance Against Rennes
On the final matchday of the Ligue 1 season, Marseille delivered a compelling performance, defeating Rennes 3-1 at the Stade Vélodrome. This win secured Marseille a fifth-place finish and a coveted spot in the UEFA Europa League (UEL), while pushing Rennes down to the UEFA Conference League qualification position based on goal difference.
Starting the day in fifth place, Rennes held a three-point lead over Marseille and had hopes of achieving a top-four finish. However, their aspirations for Champions League qualification were dashed within the first ten minutes of the match, marking a disastrous beginning for the visitors.
In only the second minute, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg found the back of the net, netting his fourth goal of the season and putting Marseille in the lead. As if that wasn’t enough, things quickly deteriorated for Rennes when Amine Gouiri capitalized on a mishap involving Rennes’ goalkeeper, Mathys Silistrie, to double Marseille’s advantage shortly thereafter.
Despite their rocky start, Rennes attempted to respond offensively, with Ludovic Blas testing Marseille’s goalkeeper, Gerónimo Rulli, with a near-post shot. Rulli was then required to make an exceptional save, deflecting a curling effort from Musa Al-Taamari onto the crossbar, reminding his team of the threats posed by their opponents.
In the second half, coach Habib Beye, who was dismissed by Rennes earlier in the season, witnessed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang extend Marseille’s lead further with a beautifully executed chip shot into the far corner after Rennes lost possession carelessly in their defensive end.
As the match neared its conclusion, Esteban Lepaul, Ligue 1’s top scorer, managed to score for Rennes with a powerful header from Arnaud Nordin’s cross, significantly energizing the visitors. However, despite this late goal, Rennes could not overturn the deficit and were left to contemplate their fate, which now hinges on the Coupe de France final where they hope for a favorable outcome to secure UEFA Europa League qualification.
The standout player for the match was Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, earning him the accolade of Flashscore Man of the Match, as he played a pivotal role in Marseille’s significant victory that brightened their European ambitions for the next season.
