Football Australia Denies A-League Return for Western United
The Melbourne-based soccer club, Western United, has been dealt a significant blow after Football Australia announced that they would not be granted a license to participate in the upcoming 2026/27 A-League season. This decision by the governing body effectively sidelines the former A-League champions for yet another year.
After being expelled from the top tier of Australian football last year, Western United has faced ongoing financial challenges. Their troubles escalated when FIFA imposed a ban on player registrations, further complicating the club’s operations. In a bid to avoid liquidation, the ownership group managed to secure funds to settle a pressing tax debt, which was due by January. However, they continue to grapple with outstanding debts owed to various creditors, as reported by Australian media outlets last month.
On Tuesday, Football Australia’s “First Instance Board” confirmed that all twelve existing A-League clubs met the necessary criteria for licensing the 2026/27 season, with the notable exception of Western United FC. An official statement from Football Australia highlighted that the club failed to satisfy the mandatory requirements set forth in the club licensing regulations.
Western United now has the opportunity to challenge this decision, with a deadline for appeals set for Friday. While the club has stated that they are currently assessing their options regarding the appeal process, they refrained from affirming whether they would actively pursue the overturning of the decision.
In their official communication, Western United expressed a commitment to the local community, assuring stakeholders that efforts are ongoing to stabilize the organization and ensure a sustainable future for soccer in the western suburbs of Melbourne.
