SOUTH KOREA BOSS HONG MYUNG-BO PRAISES TEAM UNITY AFTER COMEBACK WIN OVER CZECHS

In a thrilling opening match of World Cup Group A, South Korea showcased remarkable resilience by achieving a 2-1 comeback victory against the Czech Republic, much to the delight of their coach, Hong Myung-bo. After a challenging start, with the team falling behind due to a header from Ladislav Krejci in the second half, the Koreans rallied impressively. Goals from Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeon-gyu turned the tide, securing three vital points in Guadalajara.

Coach Hong emphasized the importance of unity and perseverance in his pre-match speech, stating, “Before the match I gave two messages: not give up until the end and unite as one. Whether on the pitch or not, we need to play as one team.” This collective spirit proved instrumental in their success against the Czechs.

Despite the win, the captain Son Heung-min faced an unexpected struggle, missing five opportunities in the first half before being substituted for Oh, who ultimately clinched the victory. Coach Hong defended Son’s performance, affirming his status as the team’s most valuable player and a steady captain, while also recognizing the need for improvement in converting chances. “We believe that Son did his best,” stated Hong, however, he noted that the team must “brush up” on their finishing skills as they move forward in the tournament.

With both South Korea and Mexico claiming three points in their opening matches, the upcoming encounter between the two national teams, scheduled for June 18, holds significant stakes in determining the group standings. Hong expressed, “Both teams scored three points… the next match will be very important.”

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, features a total of 48 national teams competing in 16 state-of-the-art stadiums.
