Impressive Start for the United States in World Cup as They Overwhelm Paraguay
The United States launched their World Cup campaign with a resounding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, marking a strong statement in their initial match of the tournament. The encounter unfolded at a vibrant pace, with Folarin Balogun being the first to probe the Paraguayan defense, although his attempt was deflected and comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
The breakthrough came within the first eight minutes when a defender’s critical mistake on the subsequent USMNT advance gifted the hosts the lead. Christian Pulisic charged through the Paraguayan defense and delivered a well-placed square ball, which Weston McKennie deftly redirected, inadvertently scoring an own goal for Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla.
Pulisic and McKennie were instrumental in the Americans’ offensive strategy, consistently posing threats. Paraguay managed to pose limited danger, with Julio Enciso providing a rare attempt that failed to cause significant concern. The USA found the net again in the 28th minute, but Balogun’s effort was nullified due to an offside call against Pulisic. However, just three minutes later, Balogun scored legitimately, tapping in a pull-back from Pulisic after a strong sprint down the wing.
In a display of dominance, the US team continued to swarm the Paraguay goal, prompting a frantic response from Gill, who narrowly avoided conceding again when Chris Richards’ header from a corner skimmed past the post. Gill was also forced to confront attempts from Malik Tillman, showcasing the relentless American offense. As the first half drew to a close, Balogun capped off a remarkable 45 minutes by expertly navigating past two defenders and curling the ball into the top corner, giving the USA a commanding three-goal lead at halftime, an unprecedented feat for them in World Cup history.
Despite a historical setback for Paraguay, who entered the tournament with the lowest goals-per-game ratio, the game turned in favor of the USA following miss opportunities and squandered shots from Miguel Almiron and Diego Gomez that were blocked by their own teammates. The Americans maintained their momentum, and cries for a penalty in the second half were disregarded when Balogun went down again.
While the 2010 quarter-finalists Paraguay struggled to regain footing, they did manage to score 17 minutes from time. A collaboration between Enciso and Almiron enabled substitute Mauricio to net his first international goal, shining a glimmer of hope for Paraguay.
Despite their best efforts, Gill kept his goal intact against efforts from Tillman and the freshly introduced Timothy Weah. However, deep into stoppage time, the USA scored yet again with a brilliant team move involving 26 passes, finished by Giovanni Reyna, who elegantly guided the ball into the net, out of reach of Gill. This impressive victory not only marked the first time the Stars and Stripes scored four in a World Cup match but also surpassed their previous largest victory of 3-0 against Paraguay in their debut in 1930. This defeat now adds to Paraguay’s streak of four losses against the USA.
Recognized for his impactful performance, Folarin Balogun was named the Flashscore Man of the Match, highlighting the pivotal role he played in this historic encounter.
