Danish Ballon d’Or Winner to Get Commemorative Statue in Front of Vejle Stadium
Allan Simonsen, the celebrated former Danish international midfielder who achieved the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 1977, is set to be honored with a statue in his hometown of Vejle. This move marks a significant tribute to the only Danish player ever recognized as Europe’s top footballer.
The statue will be strategically placed in front of the Vejle Stadium, the very location where Simonsen began his illustrious career and led Vejle Boldklub to three Danish championships in the years 1971, 1972, and 1984.
Funding for the statue is a community-driven effort, with private individuals spearheading the initiative to raise the estimated €1.5 million required for its construction. In a show of support, Vejle Municipality’s Economic and Business Committee has pledged to contribute half of the total cost.
Allan Simonsen holds a unique position in the hearts of Vejle residents, as expressed by Committee Chairman Dan Arnlov. He emphasizes the deep emotional connection the people of Vejle have with Simonsen, stating, “It’s hard to explain, because when you are from this city, Allan means something. Sometimes there is something that means more than so much else. Allan has the humility, the absolutely crazy talent – and there is a pride and a warmth around him. And it’s hard to explain to people from the outside.”
The responsibility of creating the statue has been entrusted to Danish sculptor Misja Rasmussen, ensuring that this tribute will be both artistically significant and representative of Simonsen’s legacy in Danish football.
