CHELSEA WELCOMES ITALIAN DEFENDER MARCO PALESTRA FROM ATALANTA
In a significant move, Chelsea FC has officially announced the signing of Marco Palestra, the 21-year-old Italian defender, from Atalanta. This acquisition was revealed by the Premier League club on Wednesday, although the financial details of the transfer remain undisclosed.
British media sources, however, estimate that the deal is valued at approximately £43 million, equivalent to $57 million. Palestra has committed to a contract that will keep him at Chelsea until 2033, indicating the club’s long-term vision for his contributions.
After a challenging season where Chelsea finished in a disappointing tenth position in the Premier League, the club is eager to revamp its squad under the guidance of new manager Xabi Alonso. Palestra, who was recently honored as Serie A Defender of the Year for the 2025/26 season, expressed his enthusiasm about joining Chelsea, stating, “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world…”
He further shared his excitement, saying, “I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my team-mates, and the manager.” Palestra acknowledged the strength of the squad, mentioning the presence of many talented players and a strong leadership under Alonso, which he finds promising for their upcoming Premier League campaign.
Prior to this transfer, Palestra had an impressive loan spell at Cagliari during the 2025/26 season, where he showcased his abilities as both a full-back and a wing-back. His performances caught the eye of national selectors, leading to his debut for the senior Italy team earlier this year, followed closely by a second cap for the Azzurri.
As Chelsea prepares for the upcoming season, the addition of Palestra marks a pivotal step in their strategic overhaul, and fans eagerly anticipate how his skills will bolster the team’s defensive lineup.
